R.E.D 3X3 tournament RULES

Rules and Regulations

  1. The following rules have been designed to ensure fair play for all participants. Each player is expected to understand these rules prior to participation in the tournament.
  2. Any question concerning these rules should be directed to the event staff.
  3. The R.E.D referees and directors have  the full rights and authority to make a decision in any case. It is not limited to the following specific cases covering in the following 3X3 basketball rules.

Prior to the Game

  1. Each team must have a minimum of 3 players and a maximum of 5 on its roster.
  2. The names of these players must be on the registration form by the entry deadline.
  3. Additions and/or changes to any roster must be approved by tournament officials and completed prior to the start of the team’s first game.
  4. No roster changes are allowed once a team has started their first game.A player is allowed to participate for only one team for the duration of the tournament.
  5. All players must sign the check-in sheet before each game and designate the team’s captain/spokesperson.
  6. The team captain will represent his/her team as a spokesperson at all times.
  7. All games must start with three players on each team, unless a team with three players agrees to allow the opposing team to play with only two players. If a team with at least 2 players does not allow the opposing team to play with two players, or if the opposing team has zero or one player, that team will be penalized 2 points per minute after the designated start time up to 10 points (ex. Team is ready to play 1:30 into the game, the score would be 4-0 in favor of the team on time). Game will be forfeited if a team doesn’t show up after 5 minutes.
  8. Rock/paper/scissors prior to the start of the game will determine which team has the initial possession.

Starting Play/Throw-In

The ball must be checked and thrown (not dribbled) behind the top of the arc of the three point line.

  •   First Violation: Warning from the referee or court monitor.
  •   Subsequent Violations: Change of Possession.

Game Play

  1. Length of Games: 12 minutes for group games and elimination games, 15 minutes for the final game. With running clock, the clock will stop at time out. If a game is tied at the end of game play for round robin play, the tie will stand.
  2. No make it and take it: the ball changes possession after each scored basket.
  3. Winning: The first team to score 21 points or more wins the game if it happens before the end of regular playing time. This “sudden death” rule applies to the regular playing time only (not to a potential overtime).
  4. Overtime: If the score is tied at the end of regular playing time, an overtime shall be played. There shall be an interval of 1 minute before the overtime starts. The first team to score 2 points in the overtime wins the game.
  5. Stalling: No stalling is allowed. The court monitor or event staff member may institute a 10-second shot clock at any time. After a team has been warned about stalling, failure to attempt a shot within 10 seconds will result in loss of possession.
  6. Jump Balls: All jump balls become the possession of the defensive team.
  7. Ball Clearance: When in play, the ball must be “cleared” on each change of possession. “Cleared” means both feet must be behind the three-point arc. Failure to clear the basketball is a violation.
  8. No Parking Zone: There is no 3 second rule, per se. However, the expectation is that players do not park in the key. Therefore, a 5 second rule where a player may not be in the key.
  9. Scoring: Baskets made from inside the arc count as 2 points. Baskets made when the shooter has both feet behind the arc count as 3 points. Court monitors or referees will call“two points.” If there is any doubt on the location of the shot, 2 points will be given by court monitor. Each free throw made counts 1 point. EACH BASKET MADE ON THE R.E.D LOGO AREA COUNTS 4 POINTS.
  10. Presenting: A team shall lose the game by forfeit if at the scheduled starting time of the game, the team is not present on the playing court with 3 players ready to play. In case of a forfeit, the game score is marked with w-0 or 0-w (“w” standing for win). For the winning team this game result shall not be considered when calculating the average score of the team while for the losing team this game result shall be considered with 0 points when calculating the average score of the team. A team shall be disqualified from the competition after its second forfeit or in case of no-show.
  11. Default: A team shall lose the game by default if it leaves the court before the end of the game or all the players of the team are injured and/or disqualified. In case of a default situation, the winning team may choose to keep its score as it stands or to have the game forfeited, whilst the defaulting team's score is set to 0 in any case. In case of a default where the winning team choses to have the game forfeited, the game result shall not be considered when calculating the average score of the team.
  12. After the Game: The captain of both teams need to sign the scoresheet to ensure the correct score is reported. If there is a discrepancy, the decision of the scorekeeper will be final.

Fouls/Free Throws

  1. A team is in a penalty situation after it has committed 6 fouls. Players are not excluded based on the number of personal fouls.
  2. If the foul is committed on a player in the act of shooting, that player shall be awarded a number of free throws as follows:
  3.  If the shot released from the field goal area is successful, the goal shall count and, in addition, 1 free throw shall be awarded.
  4. If the shot released from inside the arc is unsuccessful, 2 free throws shall be awarded.
  5. If the shot released from behind the arc is unsuccessful, 3 free throws shall be awarded.
  6. If the shot released from the R.E.D LOGO AREA is unsuccessful, 3 free throws shall be awarded.
  7. Unsportsmanlike and disqualifying fouls are counted as 2 fouls for team fouls purposes. The first unsportsmanlike foul of a player shall be penalized with 2 free throws, but no ball possession. All disqualifying fouls (including the second unsportsmanlike of a player) shall be penalized with 2 free throws and ball possession.
  8. Team fouls 5 and 6 shall be penalized with "1+1" free throws (make the 1st one in order to shoot the second); team fouls 7, 8 and 9 shall always be penalized with 2 free throws. Team foul 10 and any subsequent team fouls shall be penalized with 2 free throws and ball possession. This clause is applied also to unsportsmanlike fouls and to fouls on the act of shooting and overrules, but shall not be applied to technical fouls.
  9. All technical fouls shall be always penalized with 1 free throw. The free throw shall be administered immediately. After the free throw, the check-ball shall be administered by the team which had control of the ball or was entitled to the ball when the technical foul was called.
  10. An offensive foul shall not be penalized with free throws.

How the Ball Is Played

  1. Following each successful field goal or last free throw (except those followed by ball possession):
  2. A player from a non-scoring team shall resume the game by dribbling or passing the ball from inside the court directly underneath the basket (not from behind the end line) to a place on the court behind the arc.
  3. The defensive player is not allowed to play for the ball in the “no-charge semi-circle area” underneath the basket.
  4. Following each unsuccessful field goal or last free throw (except those followed by ball possession):
  5. If the offensive player rebounds the ball, he may continue to attempt to score without returning the ball behind the arc.
  6. If the defensive player rebounds the ball, he must return the ball behind the arc (by passing or dribbling).
  7. If the defensive team steals or blocks the ball, it must return the ball behind the arc (by passing or dribbling).
  8. Possession of the ball given to either team following any dead ball situation shall start/resume with a check-ball, i.e. an exchange of the ball (between the defensive and the offensive player) behind the arc at the top of the playing court.
  9. A player is considered to be “behind the arc” when neither of his feet is inside or on the arc line.
  10. In the event of a jump ball situation, the game shall be resumed with a check-ball for the last defensive team.

Substitutions

  1. Both teams are entitled to request a substitution when the ball becomes dead prior to a check-ball or free throw.
  2. The substitute can not enter the game without any prior notice to the officials or table officials while the ball is dead and the game clock is stopped.
  3. The substitutions can only take place behind the end line and require action from the officials or table officials.

Time-outs

  1. Each team shall be granted 1 time-out. Any player or substitute can request a time-out when the ball becomes dead prior to a check-ball or free throw.
  2. All time-outs shall last 30 seconds.

Disqualification

  1. A player shall be disqualified for the remainder of the game when he is charged with 2 unsportsmanlike fouls.
  2. A player disqualified from the game may be further disqualified from the event by the R.E.D CREW. Independent thereof, the R.E.D CREW shall disqualify player(s) concerned from the event for acts of violence, verbal or physical aggression, tortuous interference in game results, a violation of R.E.D’s Anti-Doping rules.
  3. The R.E.D CREW may also disqualify the entire team from the event depending on the other team members' contribution (also through non-action) to the aforementioned behavior. R.E.D's right to impose disciplinary sanctions under the regulatory framework of the event.
